Jason Momoa Breaks Down His 'Three Guinness' A Day Diet

Jason Momoa breaks down the diet that allows him to have ‘three Guinness’ a night

Momoa eats clean and trains hard during the day, specifically so he can have a few pints of Guinness every night. "The dog wants his bone," he said

JASON MOMOA IS, undoubtedly, a very fit guy. Firstly, he’s been on our cover twice – and being on a Men’s Health cover is perhaps the most definitive indicator of fitness there is. Even more impressive is that Momoa has stayed in such good shape as he approaches 50. A big part of how he’s done it is his diet, which isn’t as uniform as his physique would have you believe.

During a recent sit-down with Men’s Health US, Momoa went into detail about his eating habits. While he does eat clean when he’s preparing for a physique-focused role, he’s less strict when he’s not filming.

“For Justice League and Aquaman, you know, the Superhero shit, I had to lose weight,” he says. “But I’m not the kind of guy who wants to walk around like that. I’m old now. That’s a young man’s game.”

Whether he’s in production or not, Momoa has one non-negotiable: three pints of Guinness every night. “I just work really hard,” he said, “so at the end of the day, the dog wants his bone.”

Here, we break down everything Momoa revealed about his diet.

For breakfast, Momoa goes in one of two different directions: a dirty breakfast or a clean breakfast. When going the dirty route, it tends to depend where he’s at. His go-to order at Waveland Cafe in Des Moines, Iowa, for example, is calorie-dense. “I’m going to get The Lumberman. They make the best biscuits and gravy ever,” he says. “Ever.”

In Hawaii, he leans toward a breakfast full of Hawaiian food. That includes Kalua pork, poi, rice, macaroni salad and Portuguese sausage. He’s also got a guilty pleasure breakfast dish that he makes at home, under the buttered noodles umbrella. “Tons of spaghetti, half a stick of butter, tons of sea salt on that, and sunny side up eggs, and then a tin of caviar,” he explains. “Eggs on eggs is what we call it. That’s the fucking banger.”

But those are the more fun breakfasts. When eating healthy, like when he was making Aquaman, Momoa would have a breakfast that consists of black rice, avocado, sardines, seaweed and sunny side up eggs.

When it comes to the middle of the day, Momoa insists that he’s “Not really a lunch guy.” He’s fine with simply having grilled chicken or something clean, so he can save room for later. Why is he saving room for later? Well, it’s because he wants to have Three Guinness’ without gaining weight. “Keep it clean, I’m working, and then at night I can have my three Guinness,” Momoa says.

“My mom.. she would just drink good beer,” he explains. “But my mom used to work for Leinenkugel, and so she just raised me drinking better beers than Bud Light and that shit.”

Momoa has adapted over time as his priorities have shifted. Recently, he cut down on red meat to protect his heart health. “I used to eat steak almost every day,” he said. “I’m almost 50, and I’m like ‘I gotta lay off the caviar, oysters, beer, red wine’. It’s all the things that are bad for you, all the things that I love”.
