Pornhub’s Year End Data Shows Us Just How Wild, Dirty, and Sexy 2017 Was Online

Every year, as the calendars turn over from December to January, Pornhub takes a look back, reflecting on all the smut, sex, and… other things we’ve consumed over the past 365 days. Here’s what kind of filthy stuff people were into in 2017.

First off, people consume a massive, staggering, overwhelming amount of porn. Pornhub, which represents just the well-publicised tip of the online-porn iceberg, logged 28.5 billion annual visits and averaged 81 million daily visits. Those users ran 25 billion searches over the course of the year. And it’s not like they were ever scraping the bottom of the barrel here — in this year alone, the site’s users (either individual amateurs or production companies) uploaded 585,482 hours of porn. That’s 68 years worth of porn, people.

So what were we actually watching this year. Well, that one’s a doozy. If you want to really go balls deep into the data, check out Pornhub’s full report, which lists country-by-country trends for whatever was turning people on across the world. But here are some highlights:

WOMEN ARE REALLY GETTING INTO PORN

Pornhub reports that “porn for women” was the top trending search throughout the year, increasing 1400% percent from last year. Sure, some of that has to do with more production companies and more sites expanding into porn specifically designed for women, but the stat suggests that as far as lady-friendly porn goes, if we make it, they will cum.

“2017 seems to have been the year where women have come forward to express their desires more openly” Dr. Laurie Betito, sex therapist and director of the Pornhub Sexual Wellness Center, said in the site’s press release. “From the “Me too” movement to prominent females the likes of Hillary Clinton and Nikki Haley on the world stage, women are feeling more empowered and they have found their voice. This is a sign of things to come.”

PEOPLE ARE STILL REALLY INTO LESBIANS

Surprising no one, “lesbian” was the highest-searched term worldwide for the third year in a row. This dovetails in nicely with the “porn for women” trend, because some women also like women, and a lot of men like women, so porn that features two women is definitely going to be popular.

WE GOT INTO SOME WEIRD FLINGS

Searches for “fidget spinner” porn went way up, spurred by the global panic for strange spinning toys that Pornhub notes inspired some “very creative” amateur videos (Yes, there is a video of a guy spinning one on his dick. No, we won’t link to it. You have the same Google we do.) ASMR porn, or porn that features autonomous sensory meridian response (think people whispering or crinkling stuff), also saw a bump in searches. VR porn also saw big increases, potentially for some of the same reasons porn aimed at women did (more studios making it). It moved 14 spots up the trending list of most-searched topics from 2016.

Rick and Morty

PEOPLE LOVE THE ANIMATED STUFF, INCLUDING “RICK AND MORTY”

Hentai is back in a big way, baby. The primarily Japanese genre of sexualized anime characters rocketed up six slots on the trending list to number two, right behind lesbian, with India and China leading the way with the most searches. And cartoon-coveters didn’t stop at the Japanese-inspired art: searches for “Rick and Morty porn” also spiked in 2017.

There’s a ton, and we mean a ton more data on Pornhub’s full report.Check it out for yourself, if you’re so inclined, and here’s to 2018 being even sexier.
