SYDNEY’S MARATHON COURSE is an ideal testing ground for any serious running shoe. This year I tackled it in the Adizero Adios Pro 4. With its mix of city pavements, scenic bridges, unpredictable weather and dozens of kilometres, the event was a comprehensive trial for Adidas’ latest high-performance model.
The shoe is touted as one of the world’s best, with a number of features that should make it a top tier race day shoe. Does it hold up? These are my honest thoughts.
The look
With its high stack midsole and vibrant colour scheme, the Adios Pro 4 is certainly an eye-catcher. The three stripe Adidas logo extends from the upper to the midsole, creating a pleasing visual effect; while the midsole cutouts make the shoe naturally striking. The Adios Pro 4 will grab attention, which is fine. At Men’s Health, we like our shoes to be loud.
The specs
The Adios Pro 4 features Adidas’ Lightstrike Pro midsole, which houses its carbon-infused Energy Rods. These rods stand in place of a traditional carbon plate, but produce the same propulsive feeling. At just over 200 grams, the Adios Pro 4 is extemely lightweight, making it ideal for race days and PBs. But that lightweight feel doesn’t come at the expense of traction, with a LIGHTTRAXION and Continental outsole keeping you surefooted.
The test
The Adios Pro 4’s Lightstrike Pro midsole provides a distinctly firm yet responsive feel. On the run, I found it offered good energy return, particularly over steeper hills and in the later kilometres when fatigue set in. The Energy Rods and prominent rocker shape also make it easier to maintain momentum. Some runners may prefer a softer ride, but the Pro 4 is best suited to those who value ground feel and a snappy toe-off.
The shoe feels noticeably lighter than others in the super shoe category. The upper hugs the foot securely without feeling restrictive. During my race, I experienced no slipping or blisters — a positive, though others might prefer more room or extra padding depending on foot shape.
Conditions on Sydney’s streets can shift quickly, but the Adios Pro 4’s outsole performed reliably throughout my run, preventing slips and holding up well against signs of wear, even after some decent mileage.
The verdict
The Adizero Adios Pro 4 is great for runners looking for a low-weight race shoe and an energetic ride. If you’re chasing personal bests and value technical features that prioritise propulsion and speed over plush comfort, this model is worth considering.
