At 73, how Liam Neeson trains 5 days a week to stay action-ready

At 73, Liam Neeson still trains 5 days a week – these short workouts keep him action-ready

The actor has a very particular set of skills that includes power walking and boxing, which keep him ready for big screen action roles

LIAM NEESON HAS a very particular set of skills and is no stranger to physically demanding, high-energy roles. Throughout his career, he’s made a point of staying fit enough to meet those demands, training consistently alongside filming. That said, he’s always been clear that fitness doesn’t dominate his life.

Speaking to Film Inside during filming for The Commuter, Neeson explained: ‘I keep very fit in life. You have to doing these sorts of films, you know.’

Balance, he stresses, is key. ‘I don’t get obsessed about it, but I keep fit,’ he said. ‘And certainly for The Commuter I was setting the alarm clock for 5:15 every morning, going to the gym for 45 minutes, getting picked up, going to the studio and shooting.’

The days didn’t end there. ‘I would take like a 20-minute doze, a little sleep, and then go and join the stunt guys to rehearse some more for the fights,’ he added.

Despite the long hours, Neeson describes the period fondly. ‘They were long days, but beautiful. They were great days.’

When asked how often he trains, he’s refreshingly flexible. Neeson says he works out around five days a week, but the sessions vary depending on how he’s feeling. ‘Sometimes I’ll do maybe just 20 minutes. Next day I might do an hour. Next day I might do 15 minutes. You know, you have to keep in reasonable shape.’

Across interviews over the years, Neeson has consistently downplayed strict routines and punishing schedules. Instead, he favours regular movement through short gym sessions, boxing work, power walking and fight rehearsals, allowing him to stay physically capable and stunt-ready well into his 60s and 70s.
