How Rose Rayner and Calmerceuticals are rewriting the supplement playbook

The supplement industry told Rose Rayner her model wouldn't work. Seven years and a 91% retention rate later, the industry has a problem

BEFORE ROSE RAYNER built one of Australia’s fastest-growing supplement brands, she was just a frustrated consumer doing what most people do: hoping something would actually work.

It didn’t take long to spot the pattern. “What I had no trouble finding were products with micro-level dosing, loaded with fillers and synthetic additives I had no interest in paying for, let alone putting into my body,” she tells Men’s Health.

Most people absorb that frustration and move on. Rayner turned it into a seven-year research and development project.

"The bulk of products on the market are built around a margin, not a mechanism. Real results aren't the goal. Making money is."

The supplement industry is, by Rayner’s assessment, largely broken. Not because the ingredients don’t work – many of them do, when used correctly – but because the commercial structure behind some brands puts profit first.

“Something being on a label is completely different from it being there in a way your body can actually use,” she says. “A cheap version of an ingredient, at an incredibly low dose, isn’t what most labels highlight. Once you understand that, you can’t unsee it.”

Rose spent years searching for a supplement she was genuinely comfortable taking – something premium, effective and clean. She never found it. “That’s not a gap in the market,” she says. “That’s a category failure.” Instead, she built what she needed from the ground up.

For the next seven years, Rayner worked with her team of leading Australian scientists, testing formulas both locally and internationally, comparing ingredient by ingredient, dose by dose. “I refused to launch until the evidence justified every ingredient we added at, or above, the dose specified,” she says. “Could we have launched years earlier? Absolutely. Could I have used generic, off-the-shelf ingredients? Of course. But that is everything I built Calmerceuticals not to be.”

The result of those years of research is Calmerceuticals, which Rayner says is a deliberate inversion of the way the supplement industry typically operates.

For men, the flagship product is Ultra Performance – built around fermented Shilajit, a natural resin that seeps from Himalayan rock over thousands of years and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. “Every men’s health podcast is talking about it, and for very good reason,” Rayner says.

A double blind trial showed fermented Shilajit may increase testosterone by up to 20% within 90 days. At meaningful dose, research shows that fermented Shilajit supports testosterone, mitochondrial energy production and the preservation of lean muscle mass through hormonal decline. Ultra Performance Men has sold out six times since launch, leading to Calmerceuticals updating the formula: V2 arrives with Creatine added, not as a trend ingredient, but as the most studied compound in performance nutrition, dosed correctly inside a formula built to work with it.

But what sets Calmerceuticals apart isn’t just the ingredients, it’s what they did with them. “We use the most bioavailable form available anywhere in the world, and we went further than any other formulator on the planet by fermenting it,” Rayner explains. “That is a formulation decision backed by years of intense development work and serious science.”

“Men over 35 are losing muscle mass and vitality at a rate the supplement industry has consistently underserved,” she says. “Ultra Performance was developed to meet that standard, at the dose that actually moves the needle.”

It might sound straightforward. In practice, it was not. “Consultants said that the dose-led model wasn’t commercially viable, that the market wouldn’t pay for it,” Rayner recalls. “I got rid of every naysayer and pushed on. Those early conversations became fuel.”

The decision to manufacture in Australia – when overseas production would have been faster and cheaper – was equally deliberate. “Being Australian made matters deeply to me,” Rose says. “We could have moved faster. I chose not to. I want Calmerceuticals to represent what Australia can develop and manufacture.”

"I built this company because I was genuinely frustrated, and because I believed Australia deserved world-leading products made right here. The US and Europe have a wealth of premium supplement brands. Why don't we?”

One of the most common misconceptions in the supplement space, Rayner explains, is that the active ingredient is the whole story. It isn’t. “Delivery format matters as much as the ingredient itself,” she says. “Something being on a label is completely different from it being there in a way your body can actually use.”

The liquid format Calmerceuticals chose is engineered for bioavailability – the body’s ability to actually absorb and use what it’s given. Effectiveness is Calmerceuticals’ priority, and that extends to the brand’s broader range. Their VERISOL collagen is delivered at 10,000mg – Australia’s highest liquid dose – backed by peer-reviewed research demonstrating a reduction in wrinkle depth and fewer crow’s feet. Longevity, their gut health product, runs a Triple-Biotic System with 60 billion probiotics and 10 billion postbiotics.

“Everything we develop is built around the science,” Rayner says. “Meaningful gut support requires meaningful doses. There is no version of this where we cut corners and it still works.”

Calmerceuticals launched against the advice of people who told Rayner the model wouldn’t work. The market, decisively, disagreed. The brand now sells a product every minute. It sits in the top 1% of Shopify stores globally. Its customer retention rate is 91% – a figure that, in a category notorious for churning and burning one-time buyers, is essentially without precedent.

“You don’t see numbers like ours on the back of good marketing,” Rayner says. “They come from offering a product that delivers – because our customers get real results they can see and feel.”

"The thing we hear most from customers is 'finally, a product that actually works.'"

According to Rayner, those customers include names that speak to the brand’s growing cultural reach: boxer Tim Tszyu, TV personality and former NRL player Braith Anasta, models Ellie Gonsalves and Elle Ferguson, and content creator Max Made, among others. For Rayner, the ambassador list is a reflection of a community that found Calmerceuticals because they were looking for something better.

“I do believe the tide is turning,” she says. “Consumers are becoming more aware, they’re reading the labels. They are demanding more.”

If Rayner has a manifesto for where the supplement industry needs to go, it centres on three things: dose transparency, full accountability and a fundamental rethinking of what evidence-backed formulation actually means.

“Consumers deserve to know exactly what is in the product, in what amount, and why,” she says. “We publish everything. I want that to become the industry standard.”

On accountability: “Everyone from an integrative GP to someone buying their first supplement should be able to ask for the evidence and receive it. I urge your readers to start demanding essential information so they are fully informed.”

The Calmerceuticals story, Rayner says, was never really about supplements, but about what happens when someone refuses to accept the status quo. “It’s almost cliché but we are an ‘overnight success’ that took seven long years to come to market because I refused to cut corners,” she says. “The next five years are about lifting standards for the entire industry.”

No shortcuts. No compromises. The results speak for themselves.
