Everything We Know So Far About Disney’s Obi-Wan Kenobi Series

The highly anticipated series will see Ewan McGregor make his long-awaited return to Star Wars.

Few franchises have proved as enduring and popular as that of Star Wars. The galaxy set far, far away has generated numerous blockbusters over the years, continuing to appeal to new generations who are all too willing to invest in the story of Luke, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and now, the likes of Boba Fett too. Where it used to be the case that we would be waiting years for a new movie shedding light on another chapter in the Star Wars galaxy, Disney has sought to appease us with spinoffs and sequels. Now, the latest story to get the spinoff treatment is that of Obi-Wan Kenobi, with Disney+ announcing it will soon have its own series.

It’s an exciting prospect, not least because it means Ewan McGregor will finally make his return to the Star Wars franchise following his role in Episodes I-III. The show will also round out its cast with Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr, Benny Safdie and countless others, including Hayden Christensen returning as Darth Vader. Yep, this is one all-star cast assembly.

As fans eagerly await the release of the new series, here’s everything we know so far about the project including a potential release date, plot, and where it fits in the Star Wars timeline.

What is the Obi-Wan series about?

While Disney is remaining tight-lipped about the series, the return of Ewan McGregor to the Star Wars franchise makes for an interesting and entertaining prospect. Details seem to suggest that the series will tackle a momentous, yet nonetheless mysterious, period in the history of Star Wars; namely that of Kenobi’s years on Tatooine between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

It’s hard not to assume that the show will be centred around Obi-Wan’s desire to protect a young Luke Skywalker from the numerous threats that surround his upbringing, including that of the Sith. But it also might tackle Obi’s long-running feud with Darth Maul.

Where does it fit in the Star Wars timeline?

Disney revealed that the show will take place eight years after Sith, with fans being inclined to think it places Obi-Wan in the middle of Sith and New Hope. With that in mind, it could potentially span 10 years of Obi-Wan’s life.

Is there a release date for the Obi-Wan series?

McGregor’s return to the Star Wars franchise will commence on May 25th, the date that Disney+ has announced the new series will begin streaming across the platform. The streaming giant announced the series will be a limited one, which means it’s safe to rule out any future starring roles for McGregor in Star Wars, aside from the odd cameo.
