It’s Official: Channing Tatum Confirms Magic Mike 3 Is Happening

Get ready for a whole lot of abs on display in Magic Mike’s Last Dance.

You have to hand it to Channing Tatum: not only did the actor make dance cool long before So You Think You Can Dance hit Australian shores, but he also served as the inspiration behind many a man’s fitness journey. In 2012’s Magic Mike, Tatum filled the screen with ripped guys who not only had the kind of corrugated abs that proved aspirational, but the dance moves to match. It was an intimidating combo, but in the years since, Tatum and the crew of Magic Mike have continued to captivate audiences around the world.

But while it looked like Tatum had hung up his g-string for good and wouldn’t be reprising the role of a Tampa stripper that came to be loosely based on his own experiences starting out in the industry, Tatum has instead delivered us something of a Christmas miracle. According to the actor, a third Magic Mike movie is officially happening, with Tatum sharing the front page of the script to Instagram.

Titled Magic Mike’s Last Dance, there is yet to be a release date accompanying the announcement, nor has Tatum given anything away in terms of the plot or fellow cast members. Still, it’s exciting to think that we will once again be treated to the kind of montage of abs and flesh that will have you drafting up a new gym program and hitting those reps like you mean business.

On Twitter, Tatum also announced the news with the Tweet: “Well world, looks like Mike Lane’s tapping back in.” He also tagged HBO Max, suggesting that the movie will be coming straight to the platform, although it’s possible that it might also get a theatrical release given the popularity surrounding the franchise. The film’s screenplay is written by Reid Carolin, who also penned the first two movies, and Steven Soderbergh will direct, having also directed the original.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been six years since we saw Tatum appear on screen as Mike Lane, the stripper beloved around the world. In the time that’s elapsed, he’s authored a children’s book, done a tap number in the Coen Brothers’ film Hail, Caesar!, and he also has a new film on the cards that he’s excited to share, called Dog. But as those who follow him on Instagram will recall, he recently posted to his stories a number of videos depicting him practising his dance moves, an indication that he might be having to learnt he ropes again.

“I haven’t danced in years,” he said at the time. “And dance has moved on so much since then. I decided to document the exploration so I could see it.” And now that we know it’s all for a third instalment of Magic Mike, we can only support the actor on this journey.
