WITH THREE YEARS since his last NBA game, you might assume that Matthew Dellavedova’s basketball career is winding down. But at 35, the point guard is making a push for the 2027 FIBA World Cup and 2028 Olympics thanks to a recent transformation.
Since the end of the 2025-26 NBL season, Dellavedova has lost 7kg, his sleeping heart rate has dropped 9bpm and he’s dunking again. Training plays a role, but according to Dellavedova himself, the biggest difference maker has been using AI chatbots as personal nutritionists.
“The biggest impact this offseason has been planning out every meal and giving options when plans change (dad life) and still be able to make good choices,” he wrote on Instagram, after calling ChatGPT a “personal 24/7 nutritionist that knows my training and goals and can adjust on the fly.”

Dellavedova says the biggest takeaways from using ChatGPT as a nutritionist were to have more carbs before training, smaller portions later in the day and to know the difference between fueling on a hard day and cutting on a light day. He also found it useful to take a photo of menu, upload it and ask ChatGPT what to order based on his nutrition goals.
Along with pictures of himself looking shredded, Delly also posted some examples of how he’s used ChatGPT for nutrition advice. In one case, he explained that his workload for the day was some light shooting and an upper body session. ChatGPT then deduced that due to the lower output, it would be a good day for a more aggressive calorie deficit and provided him with a meal plan.
Not everyone believe’s Delly’s faith in ChatGPT is entirely genuine. His Boomers teammate Jock Landale commented: “Just an excuse to get the rig out. Thanks ai.”
