The Recruit star stepped back from heavyweight training to focus on a different approach to staying fit

DON’T LET THE lean muscle fool you: Noah Centineo is not a weight-pumping meathead. Or at least he’s not anymore. The 28-year-old actor tells MH that he’s spent “hundreds of hours” in gyms—and a lot of that time was spent doing standard strength training workouts. “I used to lift weights if I had to put on a lot of muscle quickly,” he says.

But now as he’s taken on roles like Owen Hendricks in Netflix’s The Recruit, he says he feels his best when he’s training bodyweight exercises—and he’s even picked up a Pilates habit, thanks to his sister. “There’s different type of Pilates, they’re all excruciating,” he admits. “I would be lying to you if I said that I don’t do classes maybe once or twice a week, because I think that’s what really keeps me in shape.”

He’s stayed out of the weight room by taking on yoga classes, ice plunges, and trails runs with his Recruit cast mates in Vancouver where the series is filmed. “It’s nice to bond,” he says of his experience.

Once he’s back in the gym, Centineo says he likes to do burnouts of pullups, pushups, and lunges to challenge himself. His biggest goal: nailing a muscle-up like a calisthenics athlete.

“I like working out—there’s like a high you get afterwards,” he says. “It’s like the number one positive thing I think that I can do to have a good outlook and take care of my mental health.”

Check out some of Centineo’s favorite bodyweight/minimal gear movements that he uses to stay positive—and in shape.
