Keen to hit the slopes this winter? Here are 10 of Thredbo's cosiest retreats

AUSTRALIA’s VIBRANT ENERGY doesn’t fade when the beaches get deserted. While some brave souls dive into the chilly waters, others are glued to snow cams, making sure their stylish ski jackets still fit perfectly. With the ski season kicking off this June long weekend, Aussies are already scouting for the best spots near the mountains, eager to maximise their time on those sweet, sweet powder slopes.

Of course, after a day of exhilarating runs, you’ll crave a cosy retreat to unwind and put your feet up. But settling for anything less than a snug and functional haven simply won’t do. You’re seeking a home away from home, a place where relaxation meets style.

Deciding on a location can be tough, with chalets and resorts all offering their own twist on an ideal winter holiday. So we’ve knuckled down and found 10 ideal locations to spend your winter holiday in Thredbo.

The biggest difference between Thredbo and Perisher

Thredbo boasts attractions for all, from Australia’s lengthiest and highest ski runs to beginner-friendly slopes. Its crown jewel is the country’s longest ski run, stretching an impressive 5.9 kilometres. Elevating the experience is Karels T-Bar, perched at a lofty 2037 meters above sea level, and a vertical drop of 672 meters, unrivalled by any other Australian resort. Notably, Friday Flat caters to novices and families, offering a welcoming Alpine Village ambience complete with accommodations, shops, and dining options. Here, visitors can savour the thrill of skiing down vast trails, ascend to unmatched heights, or embark on the enchanting Merritts Gondola ride.

Perisher, in contrast, stakes its claim as the largest resort in the region, boasting four distinct ski zones and triple the number of trails found at Thredbo. Access is effortless via the Skitube Railway from Jindabyne’s Bullocks Flat. Perisher sprawls across Perisher Valley, Blue Cow, Smiggins Holes, and Guthega, offering a plethora of attractions. With 47 lifts, extensive trails, five terrain parks, and over 100 kilometres of cross-country routes, Perisher guarantees an unforgettable experience for winter sports enthusiasts of all stripes.
