Ram 1500 2018 Confirmed For Launch

Like the other models in Ram’s Australian range, the 2500 and 3500, the 1500 will be imported as a left-hand-drive vehicle and converted to right-hook at Ram’s purpose-built facility in Melbourne.

The 1500 coming to Australia is not the all-new model first unveiled at the Detroit motor show in January, but the current generation that has existed in other markets in some form since 2008.

While the 2500 and 3500 are motivated by a 6.7-litre inline six-cylinder Cummins turbo-diesel engine producing 276kW and a monumental 1084Nm of torque, the 1500 employs a 5.7-litre Hemi V8, which is tipped to produce around 294kW/556Nm.

Ram is claiming its 1500 can produce best-in-class towing, power, cab size and cargo space, while offering a generous rear tub length of nearly two metres. The unique ‘RamBox’ storage system will be offered on the 1500.

The right-hand drive conversion process involves separating the chassis and body, then fitting a re-engineered right-hand steering system, followed by a new dashboard, heating and ventilation system. Finally, the body and chassis are re-joined.

According to Ram, re-engineering the 1500 is such an extensive process that it is officially classed as a remanufactured vehicle as opposed to a conversion.

Ram offers a three-year/100,000km warranty for the 1500, which is also backed by a nationwide dealer network.

Ram Trucks Australia chief operating officer Alex Stewart said the remanufacturing process is an extensive one that requires top-shelf personnel.

“We’re employing top engineers, designers and automotive technicians, as well as local component companies to work with us,” he said.

As for the all-new 1500 revealed in January, Ram importer Ateco Automotive and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Australia have both signalled their intention to bring the new model Down Under, however no official news has yet to emerge.

Exact pricing and specification for the 1500 will be revealed closer to the model’s release in the middle of the year.
