Russell Brand Celebrates 16 Years Of Sobriety

In an emotional video shared across social media channels, British comedian Russell Brand took the opportunity to thank family and friends after marking 16 years of sobriety.

“I remember being eggshell-fragile,” said the Get Him To The Greek actor.

“(In) 2002 I’d scored two of each. Two brown (slang for heroin) and two white (crack). Maybe a little more, I can’t remember … I would have been then hanging out at my various mates’ houses, none of whom were drug addicts. I was just sort of sneaking off to do drugs in their toilets.”

The 43-year-old referred to himself as “a proper smackhead”, but following a three-month stint in rehab, Brand finally quit drugs.

“Now, 16 years, two daughters, married, dogs, peace of mind,” continues Brand.

“Not enslaved by the opinions of other people. Not enslaved by, ‘Aw, if I could get more money, if I could get more fame, if I could get more sex. All the things that get me off drink and drugs can be worked in every area of my life.”

His followers were quick to get behind him and congratulate him on the milestone. Many thanked him for both raising awareness and for all the laughs along the way.
