The Hublot Square Bang Unico Is The Best Square Watch for the Non-Square Man

If you're looking for a watch that will set you apart, look no further than Hublot's new Square Bang Collection

Like your go-to tie or your favourite pair of shoes, the watch you wear can speak volumes about the kind of man you are. A chunkier look for the adventurous man, maybe? Or a fine gold watch for the lover of luxury? Sure. But what about if you’re a man of many tastes? Or simply just don’t fit in any one box?

In the last few years, square watches have been one of the few recurring motifs out of the big horology expos. They’re growing in number too – and for good reason: a square-face watch can go seamlessly with any suit you throw at it and won’t look out of place with your off-duty threads, either.

But finding one that stands out from the rest, can be tricky. Well… not if you’re looking towards Hublot, at least.

Inspired by the Maison’s iconic Big Bang, the Square Bang Unico is a divisive, disruptive, and unconventional watch complete with a square-patterned rubber strap and a bold, brushed case that has brought square sports luxury firmly back in the spotlight.

Released in Watches & Wonders 2022, much of the hype behind this watch stems from the challenges it poses: creating a wheel to work in a square case. While many watchmakers hide their creation pieces’ movement area after failing to discover a dependable aesthetic style or give an illusion utilising a shaped movement, Hublot took a radical direction with its in-house Unico Movement and kept the movement open. The chronograph features a column wheel that is boldly visible at 6 o’clock, made all the more clear by the extensive use of Sapphire on the dial.

Another highlight of the timepiece is the case itself, ensuring water resistance of up to 100 metres, while the case size offers an ergonomic fit reminiscent of the 42 mm Big Bang. This comes carried by a strap adorned with “chocolate squares” — a further nod to the Square Bang’s aesthetic identity. (Straps are available in Rubber, Alligator, and soft-touch leather straps, and can be easily interchanged through HUBLOT’s snazzy One Click system).

Currently, five 42mm models are available. The first three come in solid titanium, black ceramic, or King Gold, while the final two feature a blend of titanium or King Gold with a black ceramic bezel.

The Square Bang Unico truly is the perfect watch for the man who doesn’t fit in one box: a fusion between tradition and innovation, cutting edge materials and the latest digital technology.
