As the weather cools down, it’s time to add a couple extra layers to keep us warm during the colder mornings and late evenings. Tom Simpson, Heads of Menswear at The Iconic, shares his top 10 picks for autumn.
Leather Jacket
A leather jacket is every man’s go-to for colder days and nights. Styling at the moment is retro-inspired, with perfecto cuts, epaulets and belt detailing giving an update to this classic piece. My favourite at the moment is the Soulland Richenback Biker Jacket.
Work Shirt
For something different rather than your typical work shirt, This Polo Ralph Lauren style will give you broadness in your chest and shoulders without drowning you in detailing. Pair this laid-back option with your favourite denim or a heavy twill chino.
Wide-leg Denim
It seems men are returning to a more relaxed look in the denim department. Go for the original – Levi’s 501s have remained the same since 1873 for good reason.
Gusset Boot
A high-quality pair of boots are essential for any man’s wardrobe. The R.M. Williams Comfort Craftsman Boot is our favourite option here – it’s a smart investment that will pay-off for years to come.
Puffer Vest
A puffer vest is a great transitional piece that can be dressed down for a streetwear vibe, or dressed up with a collared shirt for work. A down-filled version like this Huffer vest will keep you warm and can be layered as the months get colder.
Fine Wool Sweater
A fine merino wool sweater is probably one of the most useful pieces in your autumn wardrobe. This Polo Ralph Lauren piece merges quality wool with a simple aesthetic to give you endless outfit options.
Logo Sweat
As the retro-sportswear trend shows no signs of stopping, comfy athletic sweats with bold logos are a strong option for daytime. The new Adicolor Trefoil sweats come in a range of colours, this dark green option is our current favourite.
Parka
It’s hard to imagine getting through autumn without one of these in your rotation. There are limitless options here from sherpa-lined to padded to lightweight. The Rains Parka is my pick for the season.
Cuffed Beanie
A beanie is an autumn essential that you don’t want to be caught without. The extended cuff beanie, preferably with a logo, is the most up-to-date take on this staple piece.
Denim Jacket
A denim jacket is one of those no-brainer outerwear pieces that has endless appeal. Light-blue denim is still the go-to, but a darker denim with a sherpa collar like this Levi’s piece is a fresh take on a classic piece:
