DON’T LOOK NOW, but summer season is crawling towards its inevitable end. Yes, we do still have one month to go, but the feeling of summer is already beginning to slip away.
Now that everyone has returned to work, there’s less time for late afternoons by the beach, and the far simpler option of staying home for a good old-fashioned streaming binge is becoming more appealing by the day.
It isn’t all bad news though. The new content coming to streaming platforms in February is worth staying in for. On Binge, The White Lotus is returning for a third season with a whole new cast of characters. Over on Disney+, the creator Peaky Blinders has struck again with new series A Thousand Blows. Then on Amazon Prime, Best Picture nominee Nickel Boys is making its streaming debut. February also brings us to the annual romance movie solstice: Valentine’s Day. Whether you prefer straight up romance, or a touch of comedy, there’ll be plenty to choose from.
As usual, choosing what to spend your precious time watching is the hardest part. The big hitters like Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime are so packed with must-watch films and shows that it can be difficult to discern what’s worth your time and what’s best left on the backburner – especially when you’re prone to indecision and are paying for the luxury of choice with subscriptions to multiple platforms.

What’s new on Netflix Australia, February 2025
February Netflix Highlight – Zero Day
Set in the aftermath of a mass-scale cyber attack that cripples government systems, Zero Day stars Robert De Niro as retired president George Mullen, who is appointed head of the Zero Day commission. The supporting cast includes Jesse Plemons, Angela Bassett and Lizzy Caplan. It’s looks like heavy stuff, with a cast and subject matter we’d usually expect to see in a film. Expect an absorbing account of a fictional crisis that feels ever more likely to occur in real life.
Also on Netflix in February is new series Apple Cider Vinegar, which centres on a self-proclaimed wellness guru who tricks her followers into believing she recovered from brain cancer by simply eating well, exercising and utilising some basic mindfulness. Our protagonist never actually had brain cancer and the whole thing is a scam, but that didn’t stop her followers from buying into the string of lies – with serious consequences.

February Stan Highlight – Invisible Boys
A big month is ahead on Stan, headlined by Invisible Boys. Based on the celebrated novel of the same name, the Stan original series follows three young man in Geraldton, Western Australia, who are grappling with their sexuality in a deeply bigoted community. One of the boys is a punk rocker who starts a relationship with an older man after being outed. Another is a class-topping nerd, who unexpectedly starts dating kid number three, the school’s star footy player.
Also coming to Stan is Coralie Fargeat’s body horror sensation The Substance, which is being tipped to land Demi Moore the Oscar for Best Actress. Kneecap, a riotous rap biopic about the titular Irish group that makes music in their underheard native language, is also making its streaming debut.

February Amazon Prime Video Highlight – Nickel Boys
We don’t say this lightly but if you don’t have an Amazon Prime subscription, now would be a good time to get one. The platform is head and shoulders above its rivals for streaming in February, with a tonne of top-tier new content. Foremost among the new films and series on Prime is the Best Picture-nominated Nickel Boys. Based on Colson Whitehead’s bestselling book, Nickel Boys is shot from a first-person perspective, allowing every emotional blow to feel like it’s hitting you in the audience. Our protagonists are a pair of Black teenagers in 1960s Florida. One is a high-achiever, the other has street smarts you just can’t teach. The duo must endure torrents of racial and physical abuse at a brutal reform school, where not every ward of the state makes it out alive.
If an Oscar nominated film isn’t enough to sate your hunger for new content, The Order could be more your speed. It stars Nicholas Hoult in an unfamiliar role as a white supremacist in a terrorist group known as The Order. Jude Law is the rough and tumble federal agent hot on Hoult’s tail. Also on Prime is the third season of Reacher, the popular adaptation of Lee Child’s novels. This season, expect Alan Ritchson to be doing much of the same as a big, buff guy beating up other guys who are just as big and buff.

February Apple TV+ Highlight – The Gorge
The chameleonic career of Anya Taylor-Joy continues with an action-packed film. This time she’s opposite Miles Teller in The Gorge, which follows two highly-trained operatives who guard towers on opposite ends of a vast and highly classified – you guessed it – gorge. Within the gorge is “an undisclosed, mysterious evil” that apparently needs to stay there. The pair bond in their parallel roles as they attempt to stay vigilant against the unseen threat – which, we have a feeling, won’t stay unseen for very long.
