AS WE APPROACH the end of the year, the quality of new content coming to streaming services is only improving. With the Emmys officially over, television has a clean slate and next year’s prestige offerings are slowly releasing. As for films, the year’s fourth quarter is when the big awards contenders start trickling out, so as to be fresh in the minds of critics when awards season comes around early next year.
But with so much new content on offer, choosing what to spend your time watching is the hardest part. The big hitters like Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and HBO Max are so packed with must-watch films and shows that it can be difficult to discern what’s worth your time and what’s best left on the back burner – especially when you’re prone to indecision and are paying for the luxury of choice with subscriptions to multiple platforms.

What’s new on Netflix Australia, October 2025
October Netflix Highlight – The Witcher, season 4
Premiering on October 30th, the fourth season of The Witcher is Liam Hemsworth’s first in the leading role as Geralt of Rivia. It’s been two and a half years since Henry Cavill departed the role, meaning fans have had ample time to stew. Teasers of the new season have been sparing in detail, but we have seen the new Geralt take down a wraith and gotten a first look at a new character played by Laurence Fishburne.
Also new on Netflix in October is season two of Nobody Wants This. The first season of the charming rom com paired up Adam Brody’s rabbi with Kristen Bell’s agnostic podcaster. In season two, we expect to see if their differences mean their relationship is impossible. There’s also Monster: The Ed Gein Story, which is the third instalment of the series which has previously focused on Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers.

October Disney+ Highlight – Star Wars: Visions, Volume 3
If the first two volumes of Star Wars: Visions caught your eye, you’ll know that the anthology series has been a breath of fresh air for the Star Wars franchise. The premise is loose: in each volume, nine different animation studios from around the world are given free rein to tell whatever story they want to tell, in a Star Wars time period of their choosing. As you’d expect, each studio produces a vastly different story, each with a unique animation style. For Volume 3, nine Japanese animation studios have been tasked with telling nine new stories.

October Amazon Prime Video Highlight – Play Dirty
If you’ve been waiting for a sequel to films like The Nice Guys or Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, then Play Dirty might be as close as you’ll get. Premiering on October 1st, the action-thriller is directed by Shane Black (who also helmed those two sequel-less films we just mentioned). It’s based on Donald E. Westlake’s Parker book series and stars Mark Wahlberg as an expert thief. Wahlberg has enlisted the help of LaKeith Stanfield and Rosa Salazar to pull off an epic heist that will pit the crew against the mob.

October Apple TV+ Highlight – The Last Frontier
Starring homegrown Australian talent Jason Clarke, The Last Frontier follows Frank Remnick, the only U.S. marshal in a jurisdiction of Alaska’s rugged, expansive wilderness. That’s not ideal manpower for when something goes wrong, which it inevitably does. When a prison transport plane crashes, releasing dozens of violent offenders, it’s up to Remnick to protect local law-abiding citizens. But there’s more to this than a simple accident, as Remnick begins to suspect that the crash is part of a coordinated plan that hasn’t yet reached its conclusion.
