What's Driving Russell Crowe's 13 kg Weight Loss Transformation?

Why Russell Crowe’s 13kg weight loss is about health, not image – and how he did it

The 'Gladiator' star’s latest transformation is all about longevity

A QUARTER OF a century after portraying Maximus in GladiatorRussell Crowe is once again focusing on his physical wellbeing – this time not for a role, but for a deeply personal reason. As he prepares to marry his fiancée Britney Theriot later this year, the 61-year-old actor has begun prioritising his health with a renewed commitment to diet and exercise.

According to Life & Styleconcerns had been growing that Crowe’s weight was reaching a point where it could seriously impact his health. Motivated by these concerns – and with strong encouragement from Theriot – he’s taken deliberate steps to make lasting lifestyle changes.

This isn’t about appearances, Life & Style reported, ‘it’s about his overall health and making sure he’s around for many years to come.’ That said, he naturally wants to look his best when he walks down the aisle – which means tackling his belly and improving his fitness.

How Russell Crowe lost weight

Crowe has incorporated a combination of resistance training in the gym and cardio work to help in his efforts, with his training helping him become generally fitter and healthier. Research has shown key associations between resistance training and a reduced risk of all-cause mortality, including lower risks of cardiovascular disease and cancers. It also helps to improve quality of life, and the benefits of lifting weights can persist for up to four years after just one year of training.

In total, the actor has lost 13kg so far, and is targeting another 9kg of weight loss. There’s a certain sustainability to Crowe’s approach to his diet, though. Rather than implementing a large calorie restriction, he instead prefers taking on as much nutrient-dense food as possible, such as lots of lean protein and large helpings of fruits and vegetables – while limiting junk food. This helps to form the basis of a healthy lifestyle, rather than a quick fix that he’ll rebound from.

Crowe has also reduced his alcohol intake as part of his efforts to become healthier. Though he still enjoys drinking on the odd occasion, he has recognised that ‘dark drinks’ don’t agree with him as much as vodka or tequila.
