The availability of treatments and procedures to support women with their bodies is well covered. What’s less talked about are the options for men.
Liposuction is often talked about in terms of how it can support women to achieve their goal physique, but the procedure is becoming more popular for men seeking additional help with challenging areas they’d like to reshape.
But just how common is liposuction for men, and what could it help with? To find out more, we spoke with Dr Gordon Ku and Dr Lucinda Hogan, Cosmetic Surgeons with the ME Clinic.
What Can Liposuction Help With?
Liposuction removes deposits of unwanted fat cells using a cannula and suction device to reduce or reshape targeted areas on the body.
Dr Gordon and Dr Lucinda advise that “the areas that tend to be discussed often for treatment are the abdomen, upper hips or love handles, chest and neck.”
It’s not just women who can struggle with maintaining their bodies after becoming parents. With busier days and more vital priorities to tend to, a robust exercise regime can quickly go out the window, leaving many men to experience the ‘Dad Bod’.
Both Dr Gordon & Dr Lucinda advise that this is usually categorised by extra weight gain around the abdomen and stomach, the upper hips (so-called ‘love-handles’) and the chest area (man boobs).
Whether you want to target one area or several, liposuction can be an effective way to create the physique you want.
How Common is Liposuction for Men?
Liposuction is already one of the most frequently performed treatments around the world. According to both surgeons, it’s much more common for men than it used to be.
“We have many males enquiring and consulting about liposuction treatment,” he says. “More males are enquiring than in the past.”
As such treatments become normalised for men, this trend will likely continue.
What are the Benefits of Liposuction for Men?
One of the best benefits of liposuction is how effective the results are. Many individuals only require one treatment session, with results visible within a couple of weeks once swelling subsides.
Liposuction also provides a permanent solution to fat reduction in one or more areas, as fat cells are completely removed permanently. Weight gain after liposuction is limited to the remaining fat cells, but with a healthy routine and lifestyle, it is easy to maintain the initial results.
What Does Post-Treatment Recovery Time Look Like?
Recovery time can vary depending on your specific procedure, but there are some general things you can expect.
“After your procedure, it’s common to experience bruising, swelling and stiffness. This usually subsides in 7-14 days post surgery but can last for several weeks,” says Dr Gordon. “You can still get around in this time. Just listen to your body, rest and don’t overexert yourself for the first few weeks post-surgery.”
“After any liposuction procedure, you may feel drowsy, so schedule some downtime for a full recovery. If you have a physically demanding job, we recommend a minimum of one week off,” Dr Lucinda adds.
What Else You Should Know
“Patients need to remember that liposuction is not a weight loss method, nor is it a substitute for healthy diet and exercise” warns both Dr Lucinda and Dr Gordon.
Dr Lucinda advises it’s important to explore other options before jumping straight into liposuction. Alternative options, such as diet and a consistent exercise program, can help you know whether this is the correct procedure for you.
For example, if you’ve been exercising and maintaining a healthy diet but still have stubborn fatty areas you’d like addressed, liposuction could be the perfect solution.
It’s also important to remember that liposuction is an invasive surgery, so it’s vital to ensure you allow yourself appropriate downtime and adhere to post-operative instructions following the procedure to support a full, healthy recovery.
