The best pieces of running gear that aren’t shoes

Whether you're a seasoned marathoner or are lacing up for your first 5K, having the right gear can make a world of difference

CONSIDERING THAT LEGENDARY Ethiopian long-distance runner Abebe Bikila won the Olympic marathon just 64 years ago while running barefoot, it’s astounding how far innovations in running gear have come in a relatively short time. Well, it shouldn’t be that surprising that running barefoot isn’t optimal, but still, we’ve come a long way. And thanks to an endless range of gear on offer, you’ve never been better positioned to smash out a PB.

Running is arguably the world’s most accessible sport – at its core, all you need is a good pair of shoes and an open road. But to improve performance, prevent injury and stay motivated, quality gear is as good of an investment as any. Here, we breakdown some of the best training gear for runners. The kind that will help you go the distance.

Running shirts

Wearing the wrong clothing while running can leave you feeling sticky, uncomfortable, or even worse – chafed. High quality running apparel is a must, and the best gear will be designed to wick away sweat and regulate temperature. For running shirts, look for moisture-wicking fabrics like Nike’s Dri-FIT or Under Armour’s HeatGear. These materials draw sweat away from your body, keeping you cool at all times – which is always helpful, no matter what the weather’s like.

Running shorts

As is the case with a shirt, when choosing running shorts, go for something that offers breathability, lest you end up sweaty in the last place you want to be. Flexibility is also important, so loose-fitting shorts should take precedent so you can utilise your full range of motion and avoid chafing.

Running socks

It might not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think about running gear, but don’t overlook the importance of good socks. High-quality running socks like Balega Hidden Comfort or really anything from Feetures are designed to prevent blisters and reduce friction, keeping your feet dry and comfortable.

Running jackets

A good running jacket is a must-have for winter runs, or for anyone who runs in unpredictable weather conditions. Whether you’re facing rain, wind or cold, a trusty jacket will keep you comfortable without weighing you down or steaming you up.

Hydration packs

Staying hydrated is key to maintaining performance, especially on those longer runs. Having the right hydration gear ensures you have water and fuel within reach, which can be a godsend right when you feel like giving up. Ideally, a hydration pack will be both sizeable enough to hold a good amount of water but still lightweight enough to not slow you down. It sounds like a catch 22, but trust us, the best ones can do it with good weight distribution.

GPS watches

For runners who want to monitor metrics like distance, pace and heart rate, a good GPS watch can provide real-time data to help you make improvements on the fly. Plus, if you’re a trail runner who has a habit of dashing off into the unknown and worrying about where you are later, a built-in GPS tracker can come in handy.

Headphones

You don’t need us to tell you that music and podcasts can be great motivators, but safety also deserves consideration. For that reason, it’s important to select wireless headphones that are specifically designed for runners to let you stay locked in while still keeping your ears open to your surroundings.

Recovery tools

All good runners will know that recovery is just as important as the run itself. A few key tools like a reliable foam roller or massage gun can help you recover faster, reduce muscle soreness and prevent injury.
