The story of Conor McGregor’s rise to be one of the most dominant fighters in UFC history is the stuff you’d expect of a Hollywood blockbuster. Hailing from a working-class family in Dublin, McGregor honed his craft in gyms, while working as a plumber’s apprentice. With his unwavering dedication and discipline, he continued to put in the work, and soon he came to be regarded as the most “Notorious” fighter on the planet, captivating audiences around the world as he became widely recognised as the biggest name in the UFC.
A two-division champion, McGregor went on to earn a nine-figure payday against Floyd Mayweather and was crowned by Forbes as the highest-paid athlete of 2021. It’s hardly surprising then, that he has continued to stun crowds even outside of the octagon. With his outlandish lifestyle and rock ’n’ roll attitude, his is a life of controversy and headlines. And now, it looks set to get the documentary treatment, with Netflix set to release a four-part series detailing his professional career.

Though fans have long been waiting for the return of McGregor to the octagon, it seems the much-anticipated event will coincide with the release of a documentary on the infamous UFC champion’s career. Taking to Twitter to announce the news, McGregor responded to a fan asking about his injuries and potential return, writing: “I crushed the metatarsal bones in my foot three weeks before the [Khabib Nurmagomedov] fight, and still made the walk. All injuries are not the same. You will see it all on Netflix when a serious injury with a high [percentage] of never recovering occurs, it is just simply not the same.”
He then added: “I have just completed executive production of the first episode. It is riveting…The premise of ‘I don’t work as hard as I used to since succeeding financially’ will be debunked fully. You are going to witness insanity in scientific form. This documentary will be out before my next fight – Episode 1 of 4 – and the full four will be out before my Hollywood debut in the notorious Road House. You’re about to see what’s what here. And it ain’t free.”
The announcement of the new series is sure to delight fans, particularly given the success of 2017’s Notorious, which was a feature-length documentary on the rise of McGregor. The documentary showed how the star fighter went from claiming welfare benefits and living out of his parents’ spare room in Dublin, to winning the UFC featherweight and lightweight titles, and earning major life-changing bank in the process.
The series is just the latest in a slew of projects McGregor seems to have up his sleeve, with the aforementioned Road House reboot proving most promising. With an all-star cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior and Travis Van Winkle amongst others, it’s shaping up to be a Hollywood blockbuster.
Per a synopsis from Deadline, the film tells the story of “a former UFC fighter (Gyllenhaal) who takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys but soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise. While exact details behind who Conor McGregor will be playing are unknown, sources made it clear he would be playing an original character and not himself in the project.”
Safe to say, we’ll be seeing a lot more of McGregor on screen in the future.
