GLEN POWELL was already in great shape before production on Disney+ sports comedy, Chad Powers, began. So, he didn’t need to overhaul his training routine or go on any crash diets to get the role, but he did need to make some concessions.
In an interview with People, Powell revealed that the process of transforming into a college football star required more than putting on a prosthetic nose. When asked if he had to change his diet and fitness routine for the role, Powell admitted that he went sober during filming.
“What was probably helpful to my diet is that I can’t drink alcohol when I’m wearing that mask because the face will fall off,” Powell said. “So I had to give up alcohol.”
That, of course, came with some advantages. Powell noted that not being able to drink allowed him to “stay in some pretty good shape.” He also said that filming the series was a workout in it’s own right.
“All the football is legitimate. I mean, I’m facing off, I’m squaring up with guys who played pro ball. I mean, these are real,” Powell said, recalling a particular scene where he’s rushed by a 6 foot 7, 160kg football player, which required numerous takes.
“I was like, that is the biggest thing that’s ever run at me at this speed,” Powell continued. “And so you get to start learning how to be pretty fast, and you definitely burn some calories that way. But it was all practical football; I wasn’t hitting the gym or anything.”
Chad Powers is available to stream on Disney+ now.
