Since making its debut on Netflix in December of 2019, The Witcher has continued to captivate audiences around the world. Based on the best-selling novels and short stories of Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, the story tells of Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, who has to navigate a world in which those he encounters often prove more wicked than the monsters he’s tasked with destroying. Though the books were adapted to a 2001 Polish-language fantasy film and later television series, most encountered the world through the highly successful role-playing video game franchise of the same name.
When it was announced that the series would be adapted for Netflix, most were quick to voice their criticism, fearful that this beloved world would suffer. But with Henry Cavill cast as Geralt, the series had all the trappings of a major Hollywood blockbuster, with stunning imagery and a thrilling storyline catapulting the series to new heights. It’s hardly surprising then, that Netflix confirmed the series would be renewed, with talk of lasting up to seven seasons.
As fans of the hit series have eagerly been awaiting its return for a third season, Netflix has now announced that come season four we’ll be seeing a new lead with Liam Hemsworth set to replace Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. With the third season expected to debut in the summer of 2023, Cavill has made the announcement of his departure.
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” Cavill said in a statement. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”
Cavill’s departure comes after it was revealed that he will be reprising his role as the famed caped Superman as he returns to the DC films, something that came to light after an illustrious cameo in the recently released Black Adam. While it’s unknown what direction the new film will go in, it’s clear Cavill’s schedule will be a busy one.
As for Hemsworth, the golden boy of Aussie cinema has said he is “over the moon” with the new role. “Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure,” he said in a statement. Hemsworth added, “Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
Though it may be some time before we see Hemsworth in the role, fans of the series can rest assured that the flagship franchise for Netflix will return bigger and better than ever before for its third season, and there’s even a four-part prequel series titled The Witcher: Blood Origin that’s set to land on the streaming platform on Christmas Day.
