August Netflix Highlight – Wednesday, season 2

In season two of Wednesday, Jenna Ortega’s eponymous character is reeling from all the extra friendliness and positive attention she’s been getting since reluctantly saving her school in season one. She’ll soon have bigger problems, however, once new cast members Steve Buscemi and Billie Piper join Nevermore Academy’s teaching staff, with the intent of shaking up the school. Expect to see more of the Addams family in season two, with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman (Morticia and Gomez) slated for larger roles after being kept to the margins in season one.

Also coming to Netflix in August is The Thursday Murder Club, an adaptation of the first book in Richard Osman’s bestselling series. The film will see our beloved team of retirees take shape after the suspicious death of the property developer who owns their retirement village. The cast for the whodunnit is a who’s-who of gray and graying stars: Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie are the members of the club, while David Tennant, Richard E Grant, Naomi Ackie and Jonathan Pryce also feature

August Disney+ Highlight – Alien: Earth

Alien: Earth is a prequel series to the original Alien film. It kicks off with a mysterious space vessel crash landing on earth, and you probably don’t need us to tell you what’s on board. A group of soldiers is dispatched to handle it, including Wendy (Sydney Chandler), a hybrid human who has had her consciousness transferred into a synthetic body. Kirsh (Timothy Olyphant) is Wendy’s mentor, while the rest of the team is made up of humans and hybrids. As you’d expect, the mission probably isn’t going to go smoothly.

Limitless: Live Better Now starring Chris Hemsworth will also make its way to Disney+ in August. We’re not sure that a guy as fit as Chris Hemsworth really needs to live better now, but that’s what he’ll be attempting to do in Limitless. The movie star will take on three challenges designed to improve physical and mental health and prevent cognitive decline, including learning to drum in front of 70,000 Ed Sheeran fans, climbing a frozen 600-foot wall and undergoing Special Forces pain training. We guess when you’ve already reached peak fitness like Hemsworth has, you don’t get out of bed for a challenge lesser than any of those.

August Apple TV+ Highlight – Acapulco, season four

Chief of War is Apple TV+’s new 19th-century epic starring, executive produced and written by Jason Momoa. The nine episode series is set among the idyllic backdrop of the Hawaiian islands and centres on Ka’iana (Momoa), a warrior chief who travels the islands seeking to gain support for unification between Hawaii’s four major kingdoms before Western colonisation takes hold.

Bringing the indigenous perspective to the forefront, Chief of War‘s dialogue is spoken almost entirely in Ōlelo Hawai’i and features a predominantly Polynesian cast, including Temuera Morrison, Luciane Buchanan, Te Ao o Hinepehinga and Cliff Curtis.

Elsewhere, a number of series return on Apple TV+ with new seasons. Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne’s buddy comedy Platonic is back for season two, while Invasion is getting a third season.
