Choosing the Right Mattress Will Help You Sleep Like a Baby: Here’s How

Sore back? We’ve got you.

Brought to you by

There’s almost nothing more important for the human body than sleep. According to research, our body needs sleep to feel mentally rested, recharge all of its systems, and stave off disease.

Of course, there are countless old wives’ tales on how to nod off and sleep straight through the night. Never take naps. Only sleep on your side. Drink warm milk before bed. With so many methods, how do you determine what’s true? Well, according to neurobiologist and Head of Sleep Research at Emma – The Sleep Company, Dr. Verena Senn, it might be best to start with the basics. Yep, we’re talking about your mattress.

You spend one-third of your life sleeping, so there’s absolutely no excuse for skimping on a high quality-mattress. It sounds obvious, but a good mattress has been proven to increase sleep quality and reduce back discomfort. And, according to Sleep Foundation, you should be replacing your mattress after six years.

“Sleep is a natural mood booster. When you get adequate sleep each night, you wake up being the best version of yourself, giving your mind and body the time it needs to recharge and wake up feeling refreshed. Think of gettng optimal sleep (at least 7-9 hours a night) like recharging a battery. When the battery is fully charged, it has the positive energy and motivation it needs to perform well in all areas of life,” explains Dr. Senn.

Known as one of the world’s leading sleep brands, Emma boasts a diverse team of scientists and engineers working to deliver cuttng-edge sleep technology to help you get your best sleep ever. So, to help you live that life, we’ve broken down the type of Emma mattress you should look for, depending on the issues bugging you between the sheets.

Some more great sleep tips

According to Dr. Senn, sleeping less than 8 hours a night, or worse 6 hours, has its downfalls: our body tires 10-30% more quickly than usual, our muscle strength decreases, our oxygen levels are reduced, and we can get injured more easily. Try these tips to sleep better and awaken your best:

1. Have a regular bedtime routine

2. Adopt sleep hygiene practices

3. Do not lie in bed awake

4. For some people: exercise at least 30 min./day but no later than 2-3 hours before bedtime

5. For others: exercise at least 1 hour a day but no later than 2-3 hours before bedtime

6. Do not take naps after 3pm

7. Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcoholic drinks, at least 2-3 hours before bedtime

8. Avoid large or heavy meals and drinks late in the evening

9. Give yourself time to relax before going to bed (not by watching TV)

10. Keep your bedroom dark, cool and free from any electronic devices, such as phones, tablets, laptops, TVs, etc.

11. Take a hot bath, cuddle with a loved one or make yourself comfortable in a fluffy, warm blanket before bed

12. Last but not least: Invest in a comfortable, high-quality mattress, pillow and bed linen!
