Winter is officially here and there’s nothing you can do about it. The leaves have turned and where outings used to at least hold the promise of taking the long route so as to step on the crunchy-looking leaves, they’ve now all turned to mush, coating the footpaths with a slippery sheen of vegetation that will see you injure yourself if you’re not discerning with your footing.
Naturally, this is the time of year where outdoor ventures are kept to a minimum. Unless you’re Eliud Kipchoge having to train for a marathon, why go outdoors at all? There’s indoor gyms to save you from the lashing of frosty winds and rain, and for everything else there’s an app for that…or at least we’re pretty sure there’s an app for that. This is the time of year where it’s totally permissible to sink into the upholstery, bundle up beneath blankets, wear your favourite stained crewneck and sweatpants like a uniform, and simply dive into the latest binge-watching crazes. Thankfully, Netflix is here to keep you entertained through it all.
This month, the streaming giant is delivering on all fronts as far as entertainment goes. Spiderhead lands on the service on June 17, starring Chris Hemsworth alongside Miles Teller in this genre-bending psychological and darkly funny thriller based on The New Yorker short story, ‘Escape from Spiderhead’ by George Saunders. It follows a scientist who performs experiments on inmates in exchange for commuted sentences.
And not to be outdone by her husband, Elsa Pataky also stars in Interceptor, landing on the platform on June 3. Pataky plays the last officer standing on a remote missile defence base where she battles for her life against a coordinated terrorist attack. Directed by Australian author Matthew Reilly who co-wrote the film alongside Stuart Beattie and is set to make his directorial debut, Aussie audiences will be chuffed to know it was filmed in Sydney with Hemsworth even serving as executive producer.
