A new observational study of more than 20,000 people has found that – far from harming your health – drinking up to four cups of coffee a day could actually cut your risk of early death by up to two-thirds.

The study, which was recently presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Barcelona, followed 22,500 university graduates from 1999. Subjects completed questionnaires providing information on coffee consumption, lifestyle and previous health conditions.

After 10 years, 337 of the cohort had died. The researchers found that those who drank four cups of coffee a day had a 64 per cent lower risk of all-cause mortality than those who abstained from coffee.

According to lead researcher Dr Adela Navarro, the results suggest that “drinking four cups of coffee each day can be part of a healthy diet in healthy people”.

We’ll sip to that…
