You may have thought if you can’t satisfy your partner, they’ll look elsewhere for pleasure. A new study suggests otherwise: couples with a good sex life are more likely to cheat.

New research conducted by the University of Florida analysed how newly married couples saw other people. Interestingly, they found that couples who had a good sex life were more inclined to want more of it by seeking sex with other partners.

Along with the new discovery, scientists also found that men with a more attractive wife were less likely to cheat than women with a more attractive husband. Higher rated women were also more likely to be faithful than lowly rated women.

Published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researchers looked at 233 newly wed couples over three and a half years. Marital satisfaction, long-term commitment, infidelity and whether they were still together was all noted down.

Showing participants photos of men and women of high and average attractiveness, the study authors measured how long they looked at the pictures. By measuring the time spent at the photos, researchers determined whether someone would be unfaithful or not – they longer they looked, the more likely they were to cheat. Looking at a photo for just a hundred milliseconds longer makes you 50 per cent more likely to cheat.

Other findings confirmed previous research: dissatisfaction, being younger and several short-term partners increase your chances of being unfaithful.
