Look around: the way we work is changing. From hot-desking to flexible workspaces, the new business model is about agility and getting it done on the move. Even the way we dress for work is changing, with many companies adopting a more relaxed dress code where a suit and tie were previously the norm. Sure, jeans and sneakers have been the go-to for media types forever. But there’s a new term for what lies in between; business casual, and it’s coming to a workplace near you.

It sounds vague but it’s pretty straightforward – think of it as dressed-down office wear. Depending on the company, it broadly means you can ditch the tie in favour of a smart open-necked shirt, a jumper, pants or chinos and a structured jacket if you need one. Like most outfits, your choice of shoes will make it or break it. Sneakers don’t cut it for business casual, so take a look at the new styles that rethink the look and purpose of work shoes.

Meet the ‘office hybrid’

ECCO has released its new Hybrid range, and it’s exactly that: a hybrid of a formal upper with sharp styling, and a state-of-the-art sole with shock-through technology that makes them as comfortable as your favourite sneakers.

It’s called the ST. 1 Hybrid because it uses the same sole as ECCO’s fashion trainers – the ST. 1 series. The shock-through feature in the sole gives them extra bounce so they’ll keep you comfy all day if you’re running between meetings. They’re also lightweight and flexible because ECCO use a technology in their shoes called FLUIDFORM with Phorene. It’s a finely tuned balance of cushioning and rebound with a design that fits the foot, not the other way around. You can’t get that from a stiff leather loafer.

Feels great, looks great

The new designs are right on brief for business casual, with the classic styling and details you want. There’s a Brogue, Derby and Chelsea style to tick the work box, and they’re equally appropriate to dress down a formal suit for dinner or a function. Produced in premium leather, they come in black and brown lace-ups, so whatever your colour palette they’ve got you covered.
